What is a celiac disease?

Coeliac disease is characterized by the inability of a person to digest a set of proteins (gluten) that are present in certain cereals, such as wheat, spelt, barley, rye and oats.
By eating these foods they produce antibodies that act against your own intestine causing atrophy of the intestinal wall and, therefore, malnutrition and malabsorption.
If a patient is celiac and continues a diet with gluten, in some cases, it can cause certain types of intestinal cancer.

How can it be diagnosed?

  • Total IgA antibodies  
  • IgA anti-Gliadin antibodies  
  • IgA anti-Transglutaminase antibodies
